There are numerous reasons why quality shoes are often made of leather. The material is comfortable, looks and feels great and, when properly cared for, it wears well and is praised for it's longevity. You can stretch the life of your leather shoes by following a few simple guidelines. Here are some tips for preserving your leather shoes and keep them looking first-class for years to come.

Beware of Water and Leather

When you purchase a pair of leather shoes, you also need to purchase a water repellent treatment. You may not always be able to prevent getting your shoes wet and water can seriously damage leather. For under $10 you can buy a can or bottle of water repellent treatment and protect your investment in your shoes.

Before you apply the treatment, run a warm, damp cloth all over the shoes. Not only will this dislodge any dust or dirt, the heat will open the pores of the leather so the repellent can be absorbed more thoroughly.

Remember, leather and water are not compatible. If you do get them wet, let them dry naturally, away from direct heat sources. Stuff the toes with paper towels to absorb the moisture and retain the shape. Storing your shoes on cedar shoe trees will not only help shoes keep their original form, but also absorbs odors.

Dust and Dirt is Leather's Enemy

Dust settles into the pores and creases of leather, where it acts like sandpaper, abrading and cutting the surface. Use a soft cloth to keep dust wiped off your leather footwear after every wearing.

If you have other spots on them, mix up a solution of half white vinegar/half water. This will gently wash away many spots, particular those that are made from sugary substances or alcoholic beverages.

Hairspray works magic on ink and pen marks on your leather shoes. Just spray it on then blot it off with paper towels.

Got a mark on white or other light colored leather? Try removing it with a pencil eraser.

Use Leather Conditioner

Keep in mind that leather is skin and just like the skin on your hands, it needs to be kept moisturized to remain soft and pliable. If you live in a dry climate, you will need to condition your shoes more frequently than those who live in more humid areas. Condition regularly, but don't overdo it. Just like human skin, leather can only absorb a certain amount.

Polish Leather Shoes Regularly

The use of a good, quality shoe polish will clean your shoes and help extend their life. Choose a cream-based professional quality polish, not the inexpensive liquid roll-on types. That cheaper polish contains alcohol and has a drying affect on the leather. Modern shoe polishes are formulated to help moisturize and condition the leather as well as restore its original patina.

Either purchase polish at the same time you buy your shoes or take the shoes with you to the store when you are going to buy the polish. Shoe polish is available in a multitude of colors and needs to match your shoes exactly.

Following this easy care guide for your leather shoes will help you keep putting your best foot forward for a long time to come.
